About
Professor Víctor Matamoros is a Research Scientist and Group Leader of the Nature-Based Solutions and Agriculture Research Team, which comprises 12 members. His group focuses on two main areas.
Firstly, it investigates the effectiveness of nature-based solutions – such as intensified constructed wetlands, biofilters, microalgae systems, in-stream attenuation, riverbank infiltration, Daphnia filters, and buffer strips – for removing emerging pollutants (pharmaceuticals, ARGs, PFAS, microplastics) and supporting ecosystem restoration. Secondly, it studies the impacts of chemical and biological contaminants from reclaimed water, biosolids, and manure on soil health, crop productivity, and human health, with a particular emphasis on emerging pollutants.
Víctor has participated in over 25 national and international projects, including European Green Deal and Horizon Europe, and has served as Principal Investigator for 10 of them. He also serves as Director of the Oil and Chemical Spills Service and collaborates with private companies and public administrations through various contracts. He has published more than 130 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals such as Water Research, Journal of Hazardous Materials, and Environmental Science & Technology. His research has achieved an H-index of 52 (Scopus) and over 9,000 citations as of 2025, reflecting his significant impact in environmental science and water research.
