Dr Maria José Farré (PhD in Chemistry, 2007) is Head of the Organic Chemistry Department at Aigües de Barcelona, where she leads initiatives integrating regulatory compliance with water quality monitoring. Her research addresses emerging contaminants, disinfection byproducts, and analytical methods, including high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Her career includes academic positions at The University of Queensland (Australia 2008-2014) and the Catalan Institute of Water Research (ICRA, Spain 2014-2025), where she held Marie Curie and Ramon y Cajal Fellowships and coordinated multiple research projects, including the Horizon Europe-funded into DBP initiative.

Dr Farré has authored over 75 peer-reviewed publications and serves as editor for the Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering and Desalination and Water Treatment. She was recently included in the roster of experts for the WHO Guidelines for Drinking-Water Quality (5th edition) for DBPs and PFAS. She has supervised three completed PhDs and currently supervises three more.
