About

Dr Naim Sedira is a researcher in sustainable construction materials, specialising in alkali-activated binders, geopolymers and the reuse of mineral waste. He holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Beira Interior (UBI), Portugal, completed in 2021. His doctoral work, “Novel Waste-Based Alkali-Activated Binders by Combining Mining and Other Mineral Waste,” focused on transforming industrial by-products into high‑performance, low‑carbon construction materials.

Naim is a Postdoctoral Fellow on the RMIT/Acciona PF1 project, “Geopolymer Optimised for Acid Exposure”. His research in this role centres on developing one-part geopolymer concrete using diverse mineral wastes, with the goal of significantly improving durability in aggressive and maritime environments. His work contributes directly to advancing sustainable and resilient infrastructure. Before joining this project, he worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the C-MADE Centre at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), Portugal. There, he explored biomimetic approaches in civil engineering, applying principles inspired by nature to develop innovative material solutions.
Naim’s research interests include:
  • Recycling mining and quarrying waste through alkali activation
  • Microstructural characterisation and physical–mechanical behaviour of sustainable binders
  • Development of geopolymer-based materials for infrastructure exposed to harsh environments
  • Biomimetic strategies for material design and engineering
He is passionate about interdisciplinary collaboration and the development of environmentally responsible construction technologies that contribute to a circular, low-carbon built environment.
