About

Professor José Manuel Fernández-Real Lemos holds an MD and PhD from the University of Barcelona and currently serves as an endocrinologist and scientist at the Girona Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBGI) where he leads the Nutrition, Eumetabolism, and Health (NEH) group. He is a Full Professor at the University of Girona, Head of Endocrinology and Nutrition Section at Dr Josep Trueta Hospital, Principal Investigator at CIBERobn and an ICREA researcher.

José is interested in computational and integrative approaches to metabolism and inflammation, with a focus on multi-omics data analysis and inter-organ communication. His research explores the interplay between epigenetic and microbiome-driven signals in nutritional and metabolic diseases, including adipose tissue biology, iron metabolism, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and gut–brain axis interactions.

His work on metabolic diseases and neurocognition includes work on innate immune system, inflammation and metabolic diseases as well as the brain as a metabolic organ, drosophila as a model for cognition in metabolic diseases and cognitive impairment, the adipose-liver-intestine axis and the gut–brain axis and iron as a modulator of inflammation in metabolic pathology.

Research interests

Applications of bioinformatics, multimodal data integration and computational modelling to understand mechanisms linking metabolism, inflammation, intestinal function and brain health. The role of the microbiota in obesity and type 2 diabetes, adipose tissue biology, genomic and genetic type 2 diabetes and obesity (microRNA and long non-coding RNA), non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and fatty liver disease, stratification of obese phenotypes to optimise future obesity therapy and interactions within the gut–brain axis in metabolic disease.
