About
Dr Gabriela Irrazabal holds a PhD in social sciences, with expertise in sociology of health; culture, literacy, beliefs and healthcare, bioethics and open science. She is a Research Fellow at RMIT Europe, focusing on approaches and technologies for health and wellbeing.
Her research explores the intersection of sociology, health, and beliefs, with a strong focus on how social and cultural determinants influence wellbeing. Through her work, she examines how belief systems and social structures shape health practices, particularly in vulnerable populations.
Her experience aligns closely with initiatives aimed at improving healthy living as she has explored how different social groups access and engage to health and care. Given the increasing role of digital tools in shaping healthcare at individual and societal level, her background in understanding community engagement and social structures is essential for designing inclusive and effective digital strategies. She brings expertise in participatory research methods, ensuring that interventions are socially and culturally tailored to different populations.
In addition, Gabriela has a strong interest in gender and health, particularly in understanding how social, culture and beliefs factors influence access to health and care. Her research contributes to initiatives addressing barriers related to social structures.
She is a professor of theories of societies and the state and research methods at the University of Buenos Aires and member of the national scientific council of research and technology of Argentina. She has been CI of 10 international projects on bioethics, health, human rights, culture and beliefs. She has been a Fulbright scholar, and visiting professor in Latin American and European Universities. She collaborates closely with ISOR (research in sociology of religion) from Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona.
Gabriella is member of the International Network on Science and Belief in Society, the International Network on Science, Religion, and Health and the International Sociological Association. She currently serves as the president of the Global Open Science Association.
